“Being involved in the Start Small ; Dream Big project has introduced us to primary schools with teachers that are excited about teaching careers. We believe that working with younger children helps to prepare them for the future, and the more interactions we have with young people, the more they will remember our industry.
We have visited primary schools to offer interesting and fun activities such as straws and connector challenges and design a sustainable school task. This teaches teamwork, communication, project management and other underlying skills needed in construction.
We can also adapt the task to fit in with a school topic, such as bridge building or lemon batteries.
Although the pupils are learning new skills, they are having fun at the same time, and they get to feel like they are part of something.
I have loved being involved in this project. I felt like I have made a difference, just looking at the children’s smiling faces – Why wouldn’t you want to get involved?!
