Promoting Engineering Careers
Research conducted by Somerset Council’s Economy and Planning Team highlights that the Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing industry is one of the largest contributors to economic output in Somerset and is of proportionally greater significance than is the case nationally.
In 2020 the AEM sector was worth £862m (GVA) and accounted for 7.9% of total economic output, more than double the 3.4% it contributes nationally. In South Somerset this is even more pronounced, where the contribution of AEM activities accounts for 18.3% of total economic output, more than four times the national average. AEM activities accounted for 5.8% of all employment in the county. This compared with a national average of just 3.4%.
It has also been as a priority and growth sector in Local Skills Improvement Plan reporting, so with this in mind the Somerset Careers Hub was keen to ensure the young people of Somerset were aware of the fantastic opportunities in the county.
Careers Pilot Hot Jobs
Career Pilot were commissioned to create a series of resources to promote a wide range of engineering roles. These resources include;

- Images to be used in social media/newsletters
- Lesson plans to be used alongside the resources and Career Pilot’s website.

Electric Batteries
With Agratas moving in to the Gravity site on the outskirts of Bridgwater, the design, development and manufacturing of electric batteries has become a significant area of employment and opportunity within Somerset. With that in mind, the Somerset Careers Hub purchased Faraday Fully Charged Battery Boxes from The Curiosity Box in partnership with The Farraday Institution. These boxes aimed at upper Key Stage 2 and lower Key Stage 3 will provide opportunities for students in schools close to the site to develop their understanding of battery technology and inspire them to consider this as a future career.
As part of this project, Agratas, The Farraday Institution & The Royal Institution delivered a science show “Fuel for Future “ to students at Chilton Trinity School; inspiring them to consider a career in science. This also included an after school session so the local community could find out more, as well as a session with the schools science department looking at ways to bring the curriculum to life and embedded careers education within it. In total over 550 young people engaged in the day; with 50+ adults attending the community event.
